BABY TIPS
WHAT'S NEW
Cradle cap is characterized by greasy, yellow, patchy scales on the scalp.

Don't be alarmed if your baby has cradle cap. It is only temporary and is never harmful.  Cradle cap is very common in infants. It usually occurs in the first few weeks of life.

No one knows exactly what causes cradle cap. It isn't caused by poor hygiene or allergies and it isn't contagious. There isn't much anyone can do to prevent it, but here are a few tips to help treat your baby's cradle cap.
  • Shampoo your baby's hair more often than usual. Gently brush their scalp before and afterwards. If shampooing more often seems to worsen the cradle cap, try shampooing less often then.
  • Try rubbing a small amount of baby oil or olive oil on your baby's scalp. Let the oil soak into the scaly, red skin for a few minutes. With a soft bristled brush or dry washcloth, gently rub off the flakes. Your baby's hair will be greasy, so it will take a few shampoos to get their hair clean again. This worked well for my daughter's cradle cap.
  • Use a shampoo with selenium or salicylic acid if your baby is more than six months old. Be careful not to get any on their face. It will sting their eyes. You should consult your doctor before you use any medicated shampoos.
  • An over-the-counter cortisone cream or lotion can be purchased. Use this if your baby's cradle cap is especially bad.
  • Talk to your doctor if the symptoms don't go away, or if the rash spreads. They may prescribe something stronger for your baby's cradle cap.
