My daughter didn't start eating solid foods until she was 6 months old. I started her off with prepared infant cereal, but it was sometimes difficult to get her to eat it. In fact, it was soon after that I stopped making it for her altogether and just started feeding her other foods like yogurt and pureed meats.
At first I was worried that she wasn't eating cereal like babies are 'supposed' to when they first start eating solids. But after doing some research, I realized that because she didn't start eating anything more than formula until she was 6 months old, her digestive system was capable of handling foods other than cereal.
Until recently, we were told that babies can start eating solid food at 4 months. Now, experts are saying that formula or breastmilk is all baby needs until 6 months of age.
With that being said, if your baby is refusing to eat iron-fortified cereal, don't be afraid to try introducing other types of baby food appropriate for their age.
You can purchase pureed meat for your baby in jars of baby food at your local store, or you can make it yourself at home. Slow cooked meat is the best, because it's tender. Just add some to your blender or food processor with a little bit of the meat liquid and store any leftovers in the freezer for later use.
