Tips for Buying a High Chair
With highchairs having so many different options, it’s hard to make a final decision when purchasing one. I’ve put together a little buying guide to make sure you get the most out of your baby’s highchair at feeding time.
Here’s a few things you should look for when purchasing a highchair for your baby:
- Make sure there is padding. You wouldn’t want to sit in an uncomfortable plastic seat and neither would your baby. Also, the padding should be a washable material. It’s going to get very messy as the months progress, so you want something that can be wiped down with a cloth after each meal.
- A highchair with wheels is ideal for hauling it around the kitchen and dining area. Make sure it comes with brakes.
- A wide base will help ensure that the highchair is stable enough for your child. It also makes for easier cleanup after a meal. A broom should easily fit underneath.
- Look for a three point harness at the very least, but a five point harness is the best. Make sure the straps are washable because they can get very dirty.
- Some highchairs can recline. This makes easy feeding for your baby when they start to eat cereal and jarred baby food.
- A highchair that has a heigh adjustment is great for those who will want to use the chair for a long period of time. Eventually, the tray can be taken off and the highchair lifted to table level.
- Find a highchair with a tray that leaves the least amount of space between your baby and the edge of the tray – even around the sides. If there are large gaps between the tray and your baby, there’s going to be plenty of food left in the chair by the time they are done eating.
- Check the Consumer’s Guide to see which brands are the most popular and have received the highest ratings.
- Watch out for a highchair that is on a product recall list. Always check these lists before purchasing anything for your baby.
- Try to find a highchair that can be easily transported. When visiting a relative that doesn’t have a highchair, this can be a real blessing.
